I recently had the privilege of embarking on an extraordinary adventure with a fantastic group of fellow travelers. Led by the owner's son, who seemed to know every corner of this breathtaking place, we set out from the nearest airstrip in a rugged 4x4 truck, immersing ourselves in the serene beauty of the landscape.
Upon arrival, we settled into simple yet cozy accommodations perfectly suited to the environment. As the owner had promised, the focus here was on authenticity and sustainability, a philosophy that resonated deeply as we learned about the land's rich history and conservation efforts.
Alberto, the owner's father and a passionate ecologist, acquired this land with a vision to restore it from the ravages of deforestation and halt illegal poaching. Over time, Maderas del Carmen evolved into a protected area, recognized by UNESCO as a Biosphere Reserve in 2006. It was inspiring to witness firsthand the results of their dedication—a thriving ecosystem home to mule deer, bighorn sheep, American bison, and diverse bird species.
Our days were filled with awe-inspiring encounters: spotting a magnificent bear, observing the majestic American bison, and losing ourselves in the wonders of birdwatching against the backdrop of towering mountains.
This journey was brief yet profoundly impactful. It's a place that leaves an indelible mark on your soul, beckoning you to return. I can't wait for the day when I can once again breathe in the crisp mountain air and reconnect with the natural wonders of Maderas del Carmen.
